The overnight Dexamethasone suppression tests

  • This test is done to exclude excess cortisol secretion as a cause for your symptoms (eg Cushing)
  • this is a screening test and you may require further tests
  • The test is done over two days
    • Involves blood, saliva test

If applicable..

It is important to stop all oestrogen therapy at least 6 weeks prior to test ( eg combined oral contraceptive pill, Menopausal hormone treatment). Please use alternate contraception.

Day 1

  • Arrive at around 9 AM for a blood and salivary test
  • You will be given a single tablet of dexamethasone
  •  You go home with the tablet and  you take this tablet at 11 Pm

Day 2

  • Arrive fasting for your blood and saliva test FASTING at 9 AM
  • You can go home immediately after the test is complete (around 10 AM)
