What if I have 15 years of experience?

It is a mark of success that you have worked as a senior consultant for 15 years and will have a great deal of knowledge and experience to contribute.

You have to be very clear that any UK recruitment is usually for trainee level posts. There will be some adverts for consultant level posts which will be specifically mentioned. There are some challenges to overcome

  1. UK consultant training is very rigorous and competency based.
  2. A person who has never worked in the UK while very knowledgeable may not know the way medicine is practiced in the UK.
  3. In order to get a consultant job, you have to be on the specialist register kept with the GMC. The GMC allows people who have done the deanery training programme (NTN) or demonstrated an exceptional level of competency based on training abroad. ( CESR route)
  4. The trust can appoint you in a locum post, but most trusts would be reluctant to do this, as any lawsuits, complaints cannot be vigorously defended.
  5. Although as a consultant you might have spent 15 years in the private sector, you may not be able to demonstrate progression academically without a yearly review ( called Appraisal) in the UK. This will be a requirement for accepting your experience as a consultant.

There will be candidates who have worked in an academic institute with regular publication, medical student teaching and appraisals and will be offered a consultant post.
