Please check BMA pay scale

Basic salary :

This is the core salary paid for your basic work. This is usually for 40 hours per week ( 9 AM to 5 PM or equivalent). This forms the key point on which all your added salary is based. Your pay slip will reflect what your annual basic salary is.

Banding :

This is a supplement paid on top of your basic salary to reflect your on calls and additional work. This will be based on your on call frequency and intensity. Generally it would be between 40 -50%

Extra on calls:

There will be the opportunity to do extra shifts if there are no doctors to cover a shift at short notice. This is paid accord to the NHS locum payment scale and may be between £25 – £40 per hour. So for an extra 12 hour shift you will be paid £480 on top of your basic salary.

Deductions

Tax :

This is taken from your salary before it is paid into your bank account. This depends on your annual salary and equal amounts are taken every month, so that your salary is constant month to month. The calculation is quite complex and it is all done for you by the finance department and you get a pay slip at the end of the month. The first 11000  or so is non taxable. The next 32000 is taxed at 20% and the rest is taxed at 40%. The tax brackets can be seen on the www.gov.uk website. The calculation will be done for you on www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk.
