The General Medical Council
The GMC is the licensing organisation for doctors as is the NMC for nurses. The organisation promotes its purpose as “protecting patients and guiding doctors”. It is not an organisation to support doctors or help doctors in difficulty. The GMC conducts the licensing examination PLAB which is held in different places around the world. Passing this examination provides the reassurance to the GMC that the doctor is at least at the level of a foundation year 2 doctor. You will need to prove your standard of English separately.
The GMC is located in Manchester with branches in London and other areas around the UK. You will have to pay a fee yearly.
The General Medical council registers you and provides you with license to practice medicine in the UK. This is mandatory for all doctors who work and train in the UK. The GMC has a role to protect the public and guide doctors to work within an acceptable framework
This is the guidance that the GMC sets out for a good doctor to practice medicine in the UK. This consists of 4 domains
You can observe but cannot practice medicine in the UK. That includes patient contact, procedures, taking history or examination. You cannot provide free or paid medical service without registration.
