Projects
Welcome to your APEP posting at Trafford
There are two projects available
- An audit of Insulin Pump used at Trafford ( including hybrid closed loop system)
- An audit on Sensor use at Trafford ( All CMGS/ Flash glucose monitoring
Technology has revolutionised how we manage people with diabetes. This includes the ability to monitor blood sugars more frequently and to act on the readings to improve diabetes conbtrol
Background
Monitoring
1980s self Monitoring was usually done by monitoring glucose in the urine (Bendict’s solution) This required boiling urine with a solution and noting colour change. This was inaccurate and often lead to sub optimal control
FBS (Fasting blood sugars) and PPBS (Post prandial blood sugars) were used as a guide
1990s. Finger prick monitoring was introduced by Boehringer Mannheim (BM) but this was inaccurate and relied on an enzyme to produce a colour change ( Glucose oxidase method)
- HBA1c and understanding of lipids, blood pressure in risk of complications
- UKPDS and DCCT Trial published to show good control delays / prevents complications
2010 Flash glucose monitoring
- Time In Range
- GMI/ HbA1c
This has revolutionised the way we can monitor not just the actual sugars but get more data on patient behaviors that might affect blood glucose excursions.
